Overview

William Redford is Managing Partner of Redford Legal, and leads the firm's commercial advisory work. He advises founders, owners of privately held companies and business owning families on the decisions that shape ownership, control and the future direction of an enterprise. His practice brings together corporate governance, significant transactions and business succession.

William begins with the client's objective and the commercial relationships behind the legal question. A proposed investment may change who makes decisions. A sale may leave the seller with continuing obligations. A transfer within a family may alter both management and personal expectations. He examines those consequences before helping the client settle on a structure or negotiating position.

Business ownership and transactions

His work includes shareholder and operating arrangements, acquisitions and business sales, joint ventures and investments in privately held companies. He helps clients assess the findings of diligence, identify the terms that require attention and understand the responsibilities that will continue after an agreement is signed.

William works closely with the firm's commercial, employment and real estate lawyers when a transaction affects several parts of a business. Where a purchase or investment also involves a move to the United States, he coordinates with James Redford and the immigration team so that the business arrangements and immigration planning are considered together.

Succession and family businesses

For business owning families, William focuses on the relationship between ownership, management and continuity. He helps clients consider how authority will pass, how different interests will be represented and what arrangements are needed if circumstances change. He coordinates with appropriate estate planning, tax and financial advisers when a matter requires advice beyond the agreed commercial scope.

Approach and firm leadership

William's approach is deliberate and direct. He separates questions that need an immediate decision from those that require further evidence, and explains the practical consequences of competing options. His focus is on agreements that a client understands and can use in the operation of the business.

Alongside his brother James, William helps shape the firm's direction and the coordination of its practice groups. He remains involved in matters where ownership priorities, negotiation strategy and the client's longer term plans need to be considered together.
